Common shower pump faults
- The pump will not start. Causes include a failed flow switch, an electrical fault, an airlock, or a pump that has seized.
- The pump runs when no tap is open. This usually means there is a small leak on the pumped pipework or a dripping tap or shower valve.
- Loud noise or vibration. Often air in the system, a blocked inlet filter, worn bearings or the pump not sitting on its anti-vibration feet.
- Weak or surging pressure. Often blocked filters, an airlock or a low level in the cold water tank.
- Water leaking from the pump. Usually failed seals or connections, which need fixing before the water reaches the ceiling below.
Repair or replace?
Many faults are fixed by clearing airlocks, cleaning filters or replacing seals and flow switches. If the motor has failed or the pump is old and noisy, a replacement pump is usually better value. We match the replacement to your system, because a pump that suits a positive head system will not work on a negative head system.
Shower pumps and combi boilers
Shower pumps are only for low-pressure, gravity-fed systems. They must not be fitted to a combi boiler or connected directly to the mains water supply. If you have a combi and weak shower pressure, the cause is usually the mains supply or a blocked shower head or valve, which we can look at instead.
